Brett, also called Based Brett, is a meme coin on Base, the Ethereum layer 2 network launched by Coinbase. It is based on Brett, a laid back blue character from Matt Furie's comic Boy's Club, the same comic that produced Pepe the Frog. Launched in February 2024, it became the largest meme coin on Base and the chain's unofficial mascot.
Origin
BRETT launched in February 2024, shortly after Base opened to the public, with a supply of about 10 billion tokens. The premise was simple lore arithmetic: if Pepe ruled Ethereum, then Pepe's best friend Brett should rule Base. Fair launch dispute
A widely read April 2024 thread alleged BRETT was not a fair launch, claiming insiders held more than 81 percent of the supply before the general public could buy, and that early buyers such as InvestWithRex made close to 1,600 ETH from tokens obtained during a marketing linked whitelist phase. A second part of the same thread said the whitelisted wallet addresses were hardcoded into the token contract's constructor at deployment, offered as evidence for the insider allocation claim. This is an allegation rather than an adjudicated finding, and it sits uneasily against the coin's framing as a straightforward community tribute launch; no response from the project to the specific allegation is on record.
