Toshi is a meme coin on Base named after Coinbase co founder Brian Armstrong's cat, whose two stage Coinbase exchange listing in January 2025 drove it to a computed peak market capitalization of roughly 943 million dollars, the largest of any Base cat coin.

Toshi (TOSHI) is a meme coin on Base named after Coinbase co founder and CEO Brian Armstrong's actual cat, itself a nod to Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto. Widely called "the Face of Base" and treated by CT as the chain's safest, most liquid blue chip meme alongside Brett, Toshi is best known for a two stage Coinbase listing in January 2025, added to Coinbase's public listing roadmap on January 14 then opened for live trading on January 23, a sequence that drove it to an all time high three days later, on January 26, 2025, with a computed peak market capitalization of roughly 943 million dollars, the largest of any Base cat coin. Toshi began trading the same week Base opened to the public in 2023, the same week BALD rugged, and it became the counter story, the Base meme coin that actually lasted.

Origin

Toshi is named after Armstrong's cat, itself named as a nod to Satoshi Nakamoto; Armstrong's second cat, Mochi, is the namesake of a separate, much smaller Base coin. The name carries a second, older layer specific to Coinbase: "Toshi" was the name of Coinbase's experimental mobile dapp browser and wallet product before it was rebranded Coinbase Wallet in 2018, years before the token existed, a detail CT repeats as part of the coin's lore, calling it "the OG name of @CoinbaseWallet."

Toshi has no official affiliation with Armstrong or Coinbase at the deployer level. Like Brett's relationship to Matt Furie, it is a community tribute rather than a company issued token, despite the exchange listing relationship it built later.

The project's current contract, the one all of the market figures in this article are keyed to, deployed on chain on October 9, 2023, confirmed via Basescan. Toshi's original launch, on an earlier, since abandoned contract, is reported as July 31, 2023 by Gate Learn, days into Base's public life and the same week BALD rugged; the project migrated to the current contract on "Monday October 9th, 2 PM EST (6 PM UTC)" per its own migration announcement. Early press treated Toshi as an established fixture within Base's first two weeks regardless of contract: CoinDesk profiled it as a key meme coin play among Base traders on August 4, 2023, and a trader was already calling it "The Keystone of BASE Chain" by August 8, 2023.

The Coinbase listing

On January 14, 2025, Coinbase added TOSHI to its public listing roadmap. The price reaction is reported differently by outlets measuring different windows: BeInCrypto reported a 70 percent jump, while The Block and Invezz both reported the token surging 120 to 133 percent in the 24 hours after the announcement.

On January 23, 2025, Coinbase opened live trading for TOSHI on coinbase.com and in its iOS and Android apps, at 9:16 a.m. Pacific Time, per Coinbase's own @CoinbaseAssets announcement. Toshi was the second Base native meme coin listed on Coinbase's exchange, after Degen (coin), which began Coinbase spot trading on October 15, 2024.

Three days later, on January 26, 2025, Toshi reached its all time high price of 0.002243 dollars. On its fixed supply of 420.69 billion tokens, that price implies a peak market capitalization of roughly 943 million dollars, a figure computed from price and supply rather than a single headline number, by far the largest of any Base cat coin.

Decline and current status

Toshi has fallen steeply from its January 2025 peak. As of August 2026 it trades at a market capitalization of about 51.6 million dollars, DexScreener, roughly 95 percent below the computed peak. CT still names Toshi one of Base's two "Legends" alongside Brett: "TOSHI: 'The Face of Base.' It's Brian Armstrong's cat named after Satoshi. It's the safest, most liquid blue chip meme on the chain. If Base makes it, Toshi makes it," posted repeatedly across January 2026. CoinGecko's Base Meme category page still names Toshi and Brett as the sector's two leaders.

Toshi runs its own governance structure, MEOW DAO, a four phase plan moving from team proposed votes toward full community led governance, with the TOSHI token itself as the voting credential, alongside an NFT line (NFToshis) and builder tooling (Toshi Mart, Toshi Tools) as ecosystem extensions beyond the token.

Cultural role

As Base's first major cat coin and the chain's longest standing blue chip meme, Toshi set the template that later Base cat coins are measured against, including the lineage that traces forward to BASECAT, the 2026 Cobie era Base cat rally. Where Toshi built its blue chip status slowly, over roughly a year and a half, before Coinbase's own exchange endorsed it, BASECAT compressed a similar arc, informal Coinbase personnel attention followed by a rapid market run, into a matter of days, a contrast between an unofficial tribute and a coin that drew direct Coinbase personnel engagement from the outset.
