Broccoli refers to the wave of meme coin launches on BNB Chain in February 2025 themed around Broccoli, the pet dog of Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, known as CZ. The episode became one of the defining attention events of the 2025 BNB Chain meme season and a case study in how a single social media post can spawn an entire token ecosystem in hours.

Origin

On February 13, 2025 CZ revealed on X that his dog, a Belgian Malinois, was named Broccoli. He stated that he would not issue a meme coin himself but that the community was free to create them, effectively firing a starting gun. Developers raced to deploy Broccoli tokens: the four.meme launchpad on BNB Chain hosted at least 300 Broccoli coins and pump.fun on Solana listed over 480, while rival factions fought what commentators called the Broccoli War over which token deserved to be the canonical one, with some teams making donations and supply gestures to bolster their legitimacy.

Market history

The leading BNB Chain Broccoli token spiked to a market capitalization of about 400 million dollars on February 14, 2025, one day after CZ's post, and new Broccoli variants briefly cleared 50 million dollars within half an hour of launching. The mania cooled quickly as liquidity fragmented across hundreds of claimants and attention rotated to the next narrative. The two rival Broccoli factions are directly visible on X: accounts broccoli714bnb and FirstBroccoli each separately courted CZ, replying with lines like "investing in Broccoli" and "WAGMI" and "blockchain sounds like broccoli" within days of each other, concrete evidence of the competing claimant dynamic described above. Surviving Broccoli tokens retained modest communities: by August 2026 the main BSC Broccoli tracked by CoinGecko had a market capitalization of about 6 million dollars, down more than 90 percent from its high.

Arrest allegations

Multiple independent X accounts reported in late July 2025 that a Dubai based operator named Sahil Arora was arrested with more than 20 million dollars in assets seized, accused of running celebrity meme coin scams including JENNER and MOTHER and of being behind the CZ dog themed Broccoli rug. A market cap figure of about 9.57 billion dollars was repeated across these posts for the Broccoli rug; that figure is far above the roughly 400 million dollar peak reported above, so it should be treated as an unverified or inflated figure pending independent confirmation rather than an established fact. The arrest and identification claim itself was repeated by several unrelated small accounts on the same days, but no mainstream outlet coverage of the arrest has been found.

Cultural impact

Broccoli, arriving weeks after TST, confirmed that in 2025 the fastest markets in crypto were attention markets around CZ and BNB Chain, mirroring what Elon Musk tweets had been to Dogecoin and Floki in 2021. It demonstrated both the speed of launchpad era token creation and its core problem: when anyone can deploy the meme, no one owns it, and value splinters across copycats. The Broccoli War remains a reference point in the trenches for ticker races, where being first or best branded matters more than any fundamentals.
