Floki is a dog themed meme coin launched in June 2021 and named after Elon Musk's Shiba Inu puppy, later peaking at about 3.3 billion dollars in June 2024 after rebranding into a utility ecosystem.

Floki, originally Floki Inu, is a meme coin issued on both Ethereum and BNB Chain. It was created in June 2021 after Elon Musk tweeted that his new Shiba Inu puppy would be named Floki, and it grew from a Musk tweet derivative into one of the longest lived brands of the dog coin era.

Origin

On June 25, 2021 Musk tweeted that his Shiba Inu would be named Floki, and anonymous developers launched Floki Inu within days to capture the moment. The 2021 launch was marred by two separate developer scandals: per the team's own later account, one original developer built rug pull code into the contract before being cast out, and a second developer, identified in community writeups as Marvin, then drained the liquidity pool and moved 236 ETH, about 749,000 dollars at the time, to Tornado Cash, forcing the remaining team to redeploy a new contract and relaunch on July 8, 2021 in what the community calls crypto's first community takeover. The relaunched contract carried a 2 percent reflection to holders, an automatic buyback and burn, and a 3 percent tax routed to a transparent multisig wallet, mechanics designed specifically to prevent a repeat of the original rug attempts. The team branded holders as Vikings and marketed FLOKI as a movement rather than a joke, with a total supply of 10 trillion tokens split across two chains. Unlike most 2021 dog coins it kept shipping products, including the Valhalla blockchain game, the FlokiFi token locker, and an aggressive global sponsorship and advertising push.

Market history

FLOKI first spiked during the late 2021 dog coin mania, rising thousands of percent from launch to a November 2021 peak. Binance listed FLOKI in three separate stages: Binance US opened deposits April 24, 2023 and trading April 25, 2023 with a 33 percent rally on the announcement, the main Binance exchange listed FLOKI alongside PEPE in its Innovation Zone with trading opening May 5, 2023, and Binance TR added FLOKI/TRY trading on May 24, 2023. After surviving the bear market, it rallied through 2024 and set its all time high of about 0.000346 dollars on June 4, 2024, which put its market capitalization at roughly 3.3 billion dollars based on circulating supply. It was still valued near 2.6 billion dollars on December 9, 2024 before the broader meme coin decline set in. By August 2026 CoinGecko showed a market capitalization of about 190 million dollars, down roughly 94 percent from the peak.

Impersonators and disputes

Floki later publicly disowned the entity PetabyteCapital, clarifying it had never been a project cofounder, and separately warned holders about fake FLOKI tokens circulating on Solana and Base, since the real token is issued only on Ethereum and BNB Chain. Bitget's delisting of Floki's spinoff token TokenFi cost the exchange a reported 10 million dollar deficit, with Floki accusing Bitget of listing a fake version of the token and ignoring requests to wait, a rare case of a meme project publicly blaming a major exchange for its own trading losses.

Cultural impact

Floki is the canonical example of a celebrity tweet coin that outlived its tweet. Born as one of dozens of tokens front running a Musk dog name, it outlasted nearly all of them by converting meme attention into a persistent brand, a strategy later imitated by ecosystem meme coins on every chain. Together with Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, and Baby Doge Coin it completes the great dog coin canon of 2021, and its Viking army remains a reference point in the trenches for how far community branding can carry a joke.
