BASECAT is a community launched meme coin on the Base network built around a mascot cat first adopted by Coinbase's own Base app account, whose August 2026 rally became a referendum on Cobie's credibility after he took over Base app leadership.

BASECAT is a community launched meme coin on the Base network, built around a cream colored cat wearing a small blue hardhat that the official @baseapp X account first posted in April 2025. Its defining story is not the mascot but the Coinbase connection it accumulated: Cobie, who took over leadership of Coinbase's Base consumer app in July 2026, personally followed the BASECAT account, and other Coinbase affiliated accounts engaged with it directly, feeding a trench narrative that the coin's fate was staked on Cobie's reputation. Trading opened on Uniswap V4 on August 15, 2026, and the token rallied more than 2,000 percent in 24 hours and more than 12,000 percent since launch by mid August 2026, on a token structure with no presale or team allocation.

Origin

BASECAT began as a mascot image rather than a token. The official @baseapp account posted the cat on April 8, 2025, which crypto press later cited as the moment of "organic cultural adoption" within Coinbase's Base network. The token itself launched later as a B20 style token, a Base ecosystem launch standard, through a platform referred to as "o1," with no presale allocation and no team reserves; coverage describes it as transitioning to full community governance from the outset, with the project's own language stating "There is nothing to unlock here. No allocation claim. No wallet connection. Just the community." The contract is a vanity address deliberately mined to begin with the letters "B2," a branding flourish the community points to as proof of intentional deployment; per house style the address string itself is not reproduced here.

The Cobie connection

Jordan "Cobie" Fish, the pseudonymous trader and podcaster (see Cobie), took over leadership of Coinbase's Base consumer app in July 2026 after Coinbase acquired his platform Echo for roughly 375 million dollars in cash and stock in 2025; Base creator Jesse Pollak handed him the app to refocus on the underlying blockchain. Cobie's own X account followed the official BASECAT account, and Coinbase Chief Business Officer Shan Aggarwal did as well, both read by the trenches as informal endorsement signals.

Market run

Trading opened on Uniswap V4 on August 15, 2026. On August 16, price surged, with market value jumping from under 1 million dollars to a peak of 20.35 million dollars, a 24 hour move reported at over 2,034 percent and a since launch gain reported at over 12,000 percent. 24 hour trading volume reached about 24.67 million dollars against thin liquidity of roughly 539,700 dollars, with holder count near 10,200.

Discourse during the run

The community read Cobie and Base's public attention as active amplification. On August 16, 2026, trader Marcell posted that "@baseapp and all the @base employees including @cobie have nonestop shilling $BASECAT for the past day and everyone is midcurving," adding that the token was "under 2m still, will print a fat ass candle soon." The same day, trader CryptoTalkMan theorized that Cobie's public reply to a rival Base cat coin was "the perfect distraction" that let insiders accumulate BASECAT supply cheaply before the real pump, noting "Cobie + @baseapp keep interacting with $BASECAT memes, and the Base crew has basically been feeding this thing attention nonstop." Both posts are contemporaneous community theories rather than confirmed coordination. Trader insentos captured the stakes directly: "I'm not in Basecat, but I see a lot of my friends are bullish... Cobie, you have one chance, please don't fuck this up."

Marcell also framed the run as a cross platform rivalry, calling BASECAT (then at a 9 million dollar market cap) and the Robinhood Chain coin Cash Cat (at 85 million) "The 2 freest trades in the market today," and describing the moment as "@coinbase & @RobinhoodApp going toe to toe on sending tiny memes to 100s of millions."

Volatility

Through the week of August 17 to 19, 2026, on chain data showed the market capitalization swinging from a peak near 20 million dollars down under 2 million and back into the 9 to 11 million dollar range within three days. Trader Hydraze posted on August 18, 2026 that he was "Starting to layer bids back into BASECAT here around 10/11M. Will take profits again at 14 to 18M hopefully."

Current status

As of August 19, 2026, BASECAT trades as an active, fully community run Base network meme coin with no confirmed team allocation. Given the documented multi day volatility, present day market capitalization should be checked against a live tracker such as DexScreener or GeckoTerminal before citing a figure.
