BILLY is a Solana dog coin abandoned by its developer minutes after launch and rebuilt by its community into one of the largest pump.fun tokens of mid 2024.

BILLY is a dog themed meme coin launched on pump.fun in June 2024, built around photographs of a small, wide eyed dog named Billy. It is one of the canonical community takeover stories of the pump.fun era: a token whose creator walked away for pocket change and whose anonymous community then carried it to a nine figure valuation.

Origin

Shortly after deploying the token, the original developer sold their entire holding, netting about 1,116 dollars, and disappeared, abandoning the coin's social accounts. Rather than letting the token die on the curve, community members organized a cto, taking over the X account and Telegram group and building marketing around the dog's endearing image. Yellow.com described the coin as magically resurrecting after its creator's departure. The episode occurred at the height of pump.fun's first summer, when thousands of identical dog coins launched daily and survival depended entirely on which community refused to quit.

Market history

BILLY climbed through late June and July 2024, aided by exchange listings including CoinW and Bitget and by relentless community promotion. Decrypt covered its rise to a 117 million dollar market capitalization, and CoinMarketCap's academy noted it passing 100 million dollars to become the second largest pump.fun token at the time, behind only michi. Bybit's retrospective records the all time high price of about 0.221 dollars on July 21, 2024, an implied market value near 225 million dollars against the roughly one billion circulating supply. The retreat was steep: by September 2024 the market capitalization had fallen roughly 93 percent to about 15 million dollars, and the token spent subsequent years at a small fraction of its peak.

Cultural impact

BILLY is one of the foundational proof cases for the community takeover as a repeatable trench institution. The contrast between the developer's 1,116 dollar exit and the 225 million dollar peak that followed became a much shared object lesson: on pump.fun the deployer is disposable and the community is the asset. The story is cited whenever the trenches debate whether an abandoned coin is dead or merely unclaimed, and BILLY's dog joined michi in the small pantheon of 2024 pump.fun mascots that outgrew their launchpad. Its equally sharp collapse serves as the standard second half of the lesson, that a takeover can capture attention but cannot make it permanent.

The cult classification predates most retrospectives: a September 2024 CT list of meme coins that will slowly become cults already grouped BILLY, under its original community account billycoinsolana, alongside MICHI, MUMU, and others, within months of the June 2024 launch. The community takeover account, now posting as billydollarcat, was still active in 2026, trading banter with prominent traders including Michael Saylor and blknoiz06, evidence the takeover community outlived the 2024 cycle rather than going dormant after the price collapse.
