The World Cup coin wave was the mass launch of football themed meme coins on Solana around the 2026 FIFA World Cup, peaking in May 2026 with over half a billion dollars of daily buy volume before fading with the tournament.
The World Cup coin wave was a mass speculation event in the trenches surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026. In the months before kickoff, football themed meme coins were minted on Solana at a pace that research coverage described as near vertical, none of it connected to FIFA or any official partner.
The buildup
Data compiled by exchange research desks showed monthly creation of World Cup themed tokens rising through 2025 and then exploding in May 2026, when more football meme coins were minted than in all of 2024 combined. Buy side volume for FIFA themed coins on Solana reached roughly 1.57 billion dollars in May, and on May 13, 2026 daily DEX buy volume peaked at about 542 million dollars, the biggest single day in the dataset. Solana dominated the category over every other chain, with the launches flowing through pump.fun in the standard pattern of a narrative meta.
World Cup Coin
The wave's flagship was WORLDCUP, or World Cup Coin, launched on pump.fun on May 11, 2026. It ran more than 30,000 percent to an all time high market capitalization of about 12.2 million dollars on May 21, and produced the wave's signature trade: CoinMarketCap documented a trader who spent 341 dollars within hours of launch, below a 40,000 dollar market cap, and rode the position to about 157,600 dollars in combined realized and unrealized gains. Bitrue and other exchanges published explainers treating WORLDCUP as the center of a broader ecosystem of tournament tokens.
National team coins
Beneath the flagship, launchers minted individual nation tokens for the competing countries, a sticker album of microcaps in which France, Spain and Portugal carried the largest market capitalizations at roughly 315,000, 255,000 and 225,000 dollars in late May. The structure mirrored prediction market logic without any settlement mechanism: holding the coin of a team was a bet only on other people's enthusiasm for that team.
Aftermath
The frenzy largely front ran the football. Analysts flagged in early June that May might mark the top, and the meta cooled as the tournament itself played out through June and July, folding into the general summer rotation on Crypto Twitter. As of mid August 2026 the original World Cup Coin trades around a 48,000 dollar market capitalization per DexScreener, more than 99 percent below its May peak, and the nation tokens have mostly gone illiquid, leaving the wave as a textbook case of an event meta that peaked before the event began.
