The informal community of cryptocurrency accounts on X, formerly Twitter, which functions as the public square, newswire and rumor mill of the trenches.
Crypto Twitter, universally abbreviated CT, is the loose community of cryptocurrency focused accounts on the social network X (formerly Twitter). It has no membership, moderators or borders, yet it operates as the de facto town square of the crypto industry and, in particular, of the trenches: the place where narratives are born, tokens are discovered, reputations are built and destroyed, and the day's winners and losers are announced in real time. Practitioners still say "CT" even though the platform was renamed X in 2023, and the term survives as a description of the community rather than the product.
History
Bitcoin discussion migrated onto Twitter in the early 2010s alongside forums such as Bitcointalk, and each subsequent market cycle enlarged the community: the 2017 initial coin offering boom, the 2021 bull market in which Elon Musk's Dogecoin posts demonstrated that a single tweet could move billions of dollars of value, and the 2023 to 2026 Solana meme coin era, during which CT and the trenches became effectively inseparable. Industry guides describe X as the venue where "most of crypto happens in real time, from market moves and memecoins to regulatory takes and project launches."
Role in the trenches
For meme coin traders, CT is not commentary on the market; it largely is the market. Because a meme coin has no cash flows or product, its price is a direct function of attention, and CT is where attention is manufactured and measured. Analysts of meme coin trading describe a recurring information cascade: insiders and deployers know first, small connected accounts post within hours, mid tier influencers follow, and large accounts arrive last, by which time the earliest participants are selling. Trench traders therefore monitor CT with scraping tools and keyword alerts, and a viral tweet, a celebrity slip or a news event is often deployed as a token on pump.fun within minutes of appearing on the timeline.
CT is also the arena of the KOL (key opinion leader) economy. Influencer "calls" can instantly move an illiquid token, marketing agencies openly sell CT campaigns to token teams, and undisclosed paid promotion remains one of the community's permanent scandals. Episodes such as the 2024 celebrity coin wave were organized, promoted and litigated almost entirely on the platform, and investigations of events such as the LIBRA scandal and the hawk tuah coin collapse played out as live CT dramas complete with spaces, leaked screenshots and public confrontations.
Culture
CT has its own compressed dialect, much of it shared with the trenches: gm, wagmi, ngmi, "few understand," aping, bags, rugged, jeeted, "it's over" and "we are so back." Anonymity is normal and pseudonymous accounts with cartoon avatars have moved markets, raised funds and been sued. Status is measured in followers, in profitable calls remembered by the community, and in proximity to information; the worst accusation is being someone's "exit liquidity." The community's tone oscillates between messianic conviction and total nihilism, frequently within a single post.
Criticism
Critics note that CT structurally rewards engagement rather than accuracy, that its influencer economy monetizes the losses of retail followers, and that coordinated groups (often called cabals) use the platform to simulate organic demand. Researchers and journalists covering the trenches treat CT claims as marketing until verified on chain, a practice summarized in the community's own proverb: "trust, but verify on chain."
