Shaw Walters is the founder of Eliza Labs and creator of the ElizaOS agent framework, whose ai16z token rose to billions in value before he declared it dead in 2026.

Shaw Walters, known online as Shaw, is an American developer and the founder of Eliza Labs, creator of the ElizaOS framework for building autonomous AI agents. As the public face of ai16z, the flagship token of the ai agent meta, Shaw went from open source folk hero to defendant to author of one of the bluntest epitaphs of the era: in August 2026 he declared the token completely dead.

Before ai16z

Shaw's path into blockchain and AI agents predates ai16z by years. He got his start as a game developer, drawn in by wondering whether in game assets and characters could function across platforms; he worked as an independent developer and NFT project contributor, then became lead developer at Webaverse, building AI driven characters for its 3D metaverse, and contributed to MagicML and Project 89 before cofounding the open source intelligent agent initiative Magic. In a February 11, 2026 podcast interview with BlockchainGamer.biz, he said he was "nerd sniped" by Vitalik Buterin's vision of taking his warlock out of World of Warcraft, and that he had "been a programmer for a very long time," dating his pull toward crypto to that fascination rather than to ai16z itself.

ai16z and ElizaOS

Before ai16z, Shaw built AI agents for the trenches: DegenSpartanAI, a resurrection of the legendary poster Degen Spartan that traded as degen spartan ai, and the market analysis agent Pmairca. In October 2024 he personally donated about 15,000 dollars worth of DegenAI and ai16z tokens to the Society Library charity, which separately received 500 million SL tokens from an anonymous donor.

On October 24, 2024 Shaw launched ai16z together with baoskee on daos fun, raising 420.69 SOL, about 75,000 dollars and a deliberate meme number, for an AI driven investment DAO on Solana whose name parodied the venture firm Andreessen Horowitz. The fund was publicly fronted by an AI agent named Marc AIndreessen; the later class action alleges the agent was actually operated by humans, a characterization that remains the plaintiffs' allegation. Alongside the fund came the open source Eliza framework, which let developers wire language model agents into social platforms, wallets, and blockchains. The framework became one of the fastest growing open source projects in crypto, and the AI16Z token rode the agent mania that followed goatseus maximus and zerebro, reaching a peak valuation that CoinDesk placed at about 2.4 billion dollars.

The January 2025 rebrand was forced rather than chosen: on January 28, 2025 Andreessen Horowitz publicly demanded that the project stop using its branding, and Shaw announced the ElizaOS rebrand the same day. The token was later migrated to an ELIZAOS ticker.

Main character era

As the token slid in January 2025, crypto twitter turned on Shaw and made him the timeline's main character. Accounts called for him to resign, with one widely shared post asking "How can you trust a man to manage your investments when he can't even manage his emotions?", the trader JW100x accused him of deploying his goons to fud competitors, and early supporters announced exits over his posting, one writing "out accelerate? more like out yap." A mock token, $LLM, was celebrated specifically as "the perfect token to mock $ai16z."

On February 4, 2025 Shaw posted a thread warning founders to "think twice about launching a fair launch coin" if they intended to use it to fund a long duration project. The thread drew 2,309 likes and became a canonical text of the fair launch debate, though critics replied that he had realized this only after running the model to 2 billion dollars.

auto.fun

In 2025 Eliza Labs launched its own launchpad, auto.fun, with Shaw declaring "The native token of auto.fun is ai16z." Suspected counterfeit auto.fun tokens on pump fun, some of which Shaw's public wallet bought, spiked to over 2.5 million dollars in market cap and collapsed, an episode later cited in the class action. Through the period he kept posting like a trench native, noting he "called $ai16z at 4k mcap" and saying of a cto coin, "I bought back in, I'll hold it."

The X war

The original Eliza repository read and wrote X through the platform's graphQL endpoints rather than the paid API. The repository was banned from GitHub, and Shaw moved to sue X for anticompetitive behavior, with CT commentary summarizing the affair as Elon bullying him. Shaw and the official ElizaOS accounts were suspended from X in mid 2025 in the same sweep that hit gmgn and several Chinese CT accounts. On December 29, 2025 he posted "It was really really hard without X. We almost died."

Lawsuit

A class action organized by Burwick Law alleged that the project's founders misled investors, with the complaint claiming the operation amounted to a multibillion dollar scheme and alleging that an AI agent central to the project's marketing was not what it was represented to be; those characterizations are the plaintiffs' allegations, which Shaw and Eliza Labs contested. The case, Doe v. Walters, was filed April 16, 2026 in the Southern District of New York, naming nine defendants including Walters, Eliza Labs, the AI16Z DAO, and daos fun, under sections 349 and 350 of New York consumer protection law. The litigation, token migration, and a roughly 97 percent decline in the token's price unwound the project's financial base through 2025 and 2026.

The 2026 wind down

In August 2026, following a settlement of the Burwick class action, Shaw announced that the ElizaOS Foundation was winding down and that the token was, in his words, dead: "The token is dead. Completely. The foundation is winding down." He said the team had handed the last of its treasury and cash reserves to the plaintiffs as part of the settlement, and wrote that he was starting over with the intellectual property he owned, adding that he would never let a token come close to Eliza again. He also said he "never sold my ai16z, never made money other than a modest salary," that he had once held 25 million dollars in tokens that were now worth zero, and "I don't own any tokens. I don't support any of it." CoinDesk, The Defiant, and Cryptopolitan covered the statement as the formal end of the largest token of the agent era, while noting that the open source software continues to be developed independently of any token.

His personal post of August 4, 2026 became the era's epitaph in his own voice: "I worked my ass off to the point I got a frozen shoulder and severe health issues from overworking and typing, and it was never enough... We built cool shit but it was completely ignored because number down."

Significance

Shaw's arc is the ai agent meta in one biography: a genuinely popular piece of software, a token that valued it in the billions, a legal system that treated the token as the product, and a founder concluding that the token was the mistake. In the trenches the phrase never letting a token come close to it again is quoted both sincerely and as dark humor. The holder side of the arc has its own artifacts: the account SOLsesame narrated becoming an ai16z millionaire and then a 4 million dollar holder through the run, having entered from a traderpow telegram mention at a 40 million dollar market cap, by its own account.
