Ryoshi is the pseudonymous founder of Shiba Inu, who launched SHIB in August 2020, declared "I am nobody," and erased every trace of themselves in May 2022.

Ryoshi is the pseudonym of the unknown person or group who created Shiba Inu, launching the SHIB token on Ethereum in August 2020. Nothing about their real identity has ever been confirmed, which makes Ryoshi the meme coin era's closest equivalent to Satoshi Nakamoto, an origin story with no person attached. The name itself is Japanese for "fisherman" or "fishing master," combining ryo (fishing) and shi (master), per a November 2, 2025 explainer post.

The experiment

Ryoshi framed SHIB in Medium essays as "an experiment in decentralized spontaneous community building," positioning it as a Dogecoin rival that would be owned entirely by its community, the self described SHIBArmy. The launch's signature move was sending half of the total supply to Vitalik Buterin's public wallet, a gesture that read as marketing genius when Buterin burned 90 percent of it in May 2021 and donated the rest to charity, permanently removing it from circulation and validating the token's scarcity story. SHIB went on to reach a top ten market capitalization during the 2021 mania, peaking, per Finbold, at $0.00008616 and about $42.25 billion market cap on October 28, 2021 (CoinGecko separately dates the price high to October 27, 2021, a one day discrepancy between the two trackers), minting a generation of lottery winners and establishing the dog coin category alongside Dogecoin.

I am nobody

Ryoshi wrote repeatedly that they were unimportant to the project, including the line quoted in U.Today's coverage: "I am nobody. I have said from the beginning, I am a nobody, I am not important." They also warned they would one day disappear the way Bitcoin's creator did. On May 30, 2022, Ryoshi made good on it, deleting all posts on Twitter and Medium and going permanently silent. Leadership of the ecosystem passed to another pseudonymous figure, Shytoshi Kusama, who has confirmed in later interviews covered by Benzinga that Ryoshi, not Kusama, founded the project.

The "I am nobody" line resurfaced years later. On July 12, 2025, the Shibarium focused account @Shibizens shared it alongside an image of a young Japanese nobleman while linking the Heipit app on Shibarium; U.Today's Yuri Molchan framed the post as Ryoshi's message "suddenly surfacing after 4 years," counting from the original 2021 blog message, and noted that SHIB's price fell only about 6 percent on the day Ryoshi deleted everything and vanished. @Shibizens revived the legacy again on April 10, 2026, quoting the woofpaper's ethos that "True strength lies in holding through storms and contributing during calm" and its three tenets of spontaneity, decentralization, and community driven development; U.Today covered the post with SHIB then about 93 percent below its 2021 peak. SHIB marketing lead Lucie has also invoked Ryoshi directly, sharing a cat samurai image reading "look into your soul" backwards on February 26, 2024 and thanking the community for "always reminding us about the beautiful values with which this journey began."

Kusama himself stepped down as SHIB's lead on January 28, 2025, becoming "lead ambassador" and framing the move as completing Ryoshi's vision of a leaderless, fully decentralized system: "I can now say I have accomplished my initial goal with flying colors." Through 2026 he has gone through long public silences, including no posts for the first 18 plus days of the year and a stretch of 74 days from May 13, 2026, while working on an AI software venture whose app launch he scheduled for February 14, 2026.

Identity speculation

Speculation about who is behind the pseudonym has surfaced repeatedly, none of it resolved. In August 2023 researcher @BoringSleuth theorized Ryoshi "may be a combo of 2 people: Ryo Suzuki & Tsuyoshi Maruyama," both described as advisors tied to the B2C2 Group, a market maker for Robinhood that once held over 25 percent of SHIB supply, noting Suzuki resigned from B2C2 on April 27, 2021, the same day Maruyama was appointed; the researcher conceded the theory "may seem far fetched." In mid 2022 parts of the SHIB community speculated Ryoshi had returned behind the Ethereum project Dejitaru Tsuka, pointing to on chain messages written in Ryoshi's cryptic style and a Medium post signed "we are Ryoshi"; CryptoSlate called the connection tenuous and warned about impersonators. On April 15, 2026, Eric Jackson's EventHorizonIQ ran a stylometric analysis, TonalityIQ, of 10,938 words of Ryoshi's writing against five candidates, Shytoshi Kusama, Tsuyoshi Maruyama, Vitalik Buterin, Ryo Suzuki, and Neyma Jahan, with Sam Bankman-Fried used as a negative control; it ranked Kusama the closest match with a 53.6 percent margin over the second place candidate, but labeled the result only "MODERATE confidence" and presented it explicitly as speculation, not proof.

Legacy

Speculation about Ryoshi's identity resurfaces regularly and has never been resolved. Within the trenches the Ryoshi playbook is studied as the purest execution of anonymous founding: give the supply away, build a mythology, disappear before anyone can subpoena you. Every pseudonymous deployer who claims their coin belongs to the community is, knowingly or not, quoting Ryoshi.
