retardio (RETARDIO) is a meme coin on the Solana blockchain launched in early 2024, its name coined by Andrew Tate in a viral exchange where he tried to mock the Remilio NFT identity of a crypto trader and mangled it into "retardio." More than most coins of its size, its importance is linguistic: "retardio" became a general purpose badge of honor and insult across the trenches, describing traders who embrace deliberately irrational conviction.

Name origin: the Andrew Tate exchange

The word retardio did not come from the coin's developers. It came from Andrew Tate. The trader trading_axe had for years signed his posts with a "Remilio" tag, a reference to the Redacted Remilio Babies NFT collection, and in late January 2024 he dropped that tagline under a post by Tate's @Cobratate account. Tate replied mocking him and, in the wording community accounts preserved, closed with "Retardio or whatever u call urself," a deliberate butchering of the Remilio name. One retelling summarized the spawn directly: "A cult spawned from @trading_axe dropping his Remilio tagline on @Cobratate post and Tate responded with 'Retardio or whatever u call urself.' Cult formed, Coin was made, coin mooned today." A later retelling put it the same way: "trading axe would leave a 'remilio' tag under all his tweets for years, then andrew tate commented and left his tweet with the tag 'retardio' to make fun of remilio." A variant of the lore holds that Tate also sent trading_axe a direct message reading "get my name out your mouth, retardio"; that version is community reported and unconfirmed.

The screenshot of the exchange went viral, and the Remilio community embraced the insult instead of taking offense. Within days a coin named RETARDIO was live and pumping, a sequence one observer mocked at the time: "Andrew Tate invents the funniest word ever, Retardio, and instead of sweeping the Remilio floor, Remilios all pump a shitcoin called Retardio. I love you, but you're not serious people." trading_axe himself leaned into it, writing in March 2024 that "Retardio was and is a GREAT CT MEME... Forget the origins and Tate trying to beef me," and, as the coin crossed 30 million dollars, joking about how long until Tate posted "PURE DISGUST" at the phenomenon. One day one buyer later recalled holding the position to a 120,000 dollar profit.

Ecosystem

The token launched fairly on Solana DEXs with no ICO or venture backing, per exchange descriptions, and its creators have remained anonymous. The project grew into a small ecosystem: the Retardio Cousins, a collection of 4,444 deliberately ugly NFT profile pictures drawn in the Remilio style (one critic described them as "clown makeup on Remilio babies") whose holders formed one of Solana's loudest subcultures. The collection trades on Magic Eden, Tensor and Solanart, and price trackers record about 2,446 unique owners, a total collection market cap around 416,755 dollars and a floor price in the 1.29 to 1.33 SOL range. The ecosystem later added a named casino product: Retardio launched its meme coin casino on October 6, 2024, and the token rallied more than 730 percent from its inception level around the launch. The project allocated 20 percent of its 2 billion token supply to casino rewards, including airdrops and loot boxes containing bonuses and real world prizes for holders. The brand's entire aesthetic was self aware stupidity, positioning itself against both serious DeFi and polished meme marketing. The early run had its own drama: in March 2024 one trader documented the coin running to about 20 million dollars and then dropping by half the same night Frank DeGods publicly backed it.

Market history

RETARDIO built slowly through 2024 as its NFT community amplified the token. It hit a then record market capitalization of 200.69 million dollars on October 14, 2024 (the meme number was celebrated as part of the milestone), and price trackers record its all time high around 0.22 to 0.24 dollars on November 7, 2024, a market value of roughly 230 million dollars against a circulating supply near 976 million. The token received centralized exchange listings including MEXC. It declined through 2025 with the broader meme complex, and trackers in 2026 place its market capitalization in the single digit to low tens of millions depending on venue.

Cultural impact

The word did the work. "Retardio" entered everyday trench vocabulary as the name for the archetypal Solana degen, and the Retardio Cousins pioneered the loud, self deprecating NFT to meme coin community pipeline that later projects imitated. The community's raid culture on X, its ironic anti intellectualism, and its insistence that being early matters more than being right made it one of the defining subcultures of the 2024 Solana meme era, with influence measured less by market capitalization than by how much of its language the wider market adopted.
