WEN is a [[Solana]] [[meme coin]] launched on January 26, 2024 by the team behind the decentralized exchange aggregator [[Jupiter]]. It began as a poem, "A Love Letter to Wen Bros," written by Jupiter's pseudonymous founder Meow, which was minted as an NFT and then fractionalized into roughly one trillion tokens, each representing a proportional share of the poem. The name plays on "wen," the crypto slang question that communities endlessly ask about tokens and airdrops ("wen token," "wen airdrop"). ## Origin The launch doubled as infrastructure testing. Jupiter used WEN as a dress rehearsal for its LFG launchpad and for the much larger JUP airdrop that followed days later, and the token introduced a new experimental Solana asset standard for fractionalized NFT ownership built with technology from the Ovols NFT project. Seventy percent of the supply was airdropped in equal shares to more than one million wallets, including anyone who had used Jupiter in the prior six months, holders of major Solana NFT collections, and Saga phone holders. The claim window ran two weeks; unclaimed tokens, at one point tracked by CoinDesk at around 17 percent of supply and later measured near 30 percent of the airdrop, were burned, leaving a circulating supply of roughly 730 billion. ## Market history WEN traded actively from its first hours, and because so many wallets received it for free, it became for many Solana users their first meme coin sale or hold decision. The token rose through the great meme coin run of early 2024 and, according to CoinGecko, reached its all time high of about 0.0005 dollars on March 27, 2024, which against the roughly 730 billion circulating supply implied a market value of about 370 million dollars. It declined with the broader meme complex afterward; by August 2026 CoinGecko showed a market capitalization of about 2 million dollars. ## Cultural impact WEN occupies an unusual place in trench history: a meme coin launched by one of Solana's most important infrastructure teams, distributed to the entire active user base rather than sold. Its airdrop, arriving in the same week as the JUP distribution, is frequently credited with onboarding a huge cohort of wallets into meme coin trading just before the [[pump.fun]] era began, and "wen" culture (the joke that every community demands "wen token") was effectively canonized by the token's existence. The fractionalized poem framing is also cited as an early experiment in treating community in jokes themselves as on chain assets, a precursor of later attempts to give meme coins a conceptual hook beyond a mascot. In [[the trenches]] WEN is remembered fondly as free money from the January 2024 airdrop season, and as a reminder that even a token backed by a beloved team follows the same rise and fade cycle as every other meme. ## References - https://decrypt.co/214282/wen-token-over-million-wallets-eligible-solana-meme-coin-airdrop - https://decrypt.co/214546/wen-airdrop-41-of-solana-meme-coin-still-unclaimed-as-deadline-looms - https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2024/01/27/around-17-of-wen-token-supply-could-be-burned-after-airdrop-data-suggests - https://www.dlnews.com/articles/defi/jupiter-wen-airdrop-introduces-new-solana-nft-standard/ - https://nftnow.com/news/jupiter-exchange-debuts-wen-on-new-token-launchpad/ - https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/wen
