Mert Mumtaz is a Canadian software engineer and the cofounder and CEO of Helius, the infrastructure company whose RPC services, indexing, and developer tools underpin much of the application layer of [[Solana]], including the trading terminals and bots used daily in [[the trenches]]. An authenticated lookup of his old handle @0xMert_ returns not found; he now posts from the first name handle @mert, with about 1,941,000 followers as of August 2026 and a bio identifying him as "ceo @helius" and, in his own word, "cyphercapitalist." He is widely regarded as the network's most prominent public advocate.

## Career

Born in Istanbul and raised in Niagara Falls, Canada, Mumtaz worked as a software engineer at Coinbase and earlier at companies including Shutterstock and BlackBerry before founding Helius. The company raised a 9.5 million dollar Series A led by Foundation Capital, with participation from Solana cofounders [[Anatoly Yakovenko]] and [[Raj Gokal]], and grew into the dominant RPC provider on the network, also operating an explorer and indexing services relied on by major Solana applications. He additionally hosts a podcast with Blockworks.

## Role in trench culture

Mumtaz does not present as a memecoin trader, but trench activity runs on his rails: the sniping, [[copy trading]], and launch monitoring economy around [[pump.fun]] consumes enormous RPC bandwidth, and Helius sits underneath much of it. He rose to prominence defending Solana's viability after the FTX collapse in late 2022, and through the memecoin era he has been the go to rebuttal account whenever congestion, outages, or slop criticism of the chain trends.

On September 15, 2025, when the unrelated Nasdaq company Helius Medical Technologies announced a 500 million dollar plus Solana treasury raise led by Pantera and Summer Capital, Crypto Twitter immediately conflated it with Mumtaz's Helius Labs. He posted "I have already received 50+ msgs. IT IS NOT ME" and "I'm not involved with this at all, the name is yet another coincidence."

In 2026 he has fronted communications around Solana privacy features, including encrypted balances and trading protections against maximal extractable value, discussed in an August 2026 Genfinity interview. Helius absorbed the Light Protocol team and unveiled Rings, pitched as Solana's first on chain privacy protocol with confidential and anonymous modes plus configurable compliance controls; it entered private beta with Mumtaz targeting mainnet around August 2026 and an outer bound of October. He also carries the ecosystem's broader marketing vocabulary: a CoinDesk podcast episode features him explaining why [[Internet Capital Markets|internet capital markets]] are "finally actually happening" on Solana, pairing him with the framing [[Lily Liu]] coined.

## Slogans and IBRL

Mumtaz is the author of much of the ecosystem's slogan stack, by his own account. In November 2025 he wrote, "the secret to any CT meme is just repetition, super underrated. OPOS, IBRL, ICM, trillions, zidelined, retardio etc all just are versions of this," and later added, "I am actively trying to shitpost myself into coming up with newer manlet slogans... some past bangers include opos, icm, ibrl." [[IBRL]], short for Increase Bandwidth, Reduce Latency, became infrastructure branding in its own right: Jito launched an "IBRL Explorer" for Solana block visibility in January 2026.

Helius doubles as a validator operator, and Mumtaz has made that a talking point too, posting on January 5, 2026 that "Helius by far the highest IBRL score of the top validators on Solana... the only validator in the top that comes close to us is bitwise, also run by us." Not everyone treats the branding as a win: a recurring backlash meme holds that "IBRL killed the trenches," blaming the speed optimization Mumtaz champions for professionalizing what had been a rougher, more open casino.

## Controversies

Mumtaz's combative debate style is itself the main source of friction; his exchanges with critics of Solana are frequent, public, and often heated, and detractors accuse him of reflexive network boosterism. The sources consulted record no allegations of personal or business misconduct. Criticism that Solana infrastructure firms profit from memecoin speculation applies to Helius as a category matter and is generally acknowledged rather than disputed in coverage.

## Cultural footprint

Mert is a first name celebrity on crypto Twitter, memed as Solana's lawyer and its most reliable reply guy. Screenshots of his rebuttals circulate as content in their own right, and trenchers treat his uptime updates with the attention normally reserved for market news, since when RPCs degrade, the trenches stop. He exemplifies the trench era pattern in which infrastructure operators became public personalities on par with the traders they serve.
