Lily Liu is the president of the Solana Foundation, the Swiss nonprofit that stewards the [[Solana]] network on which nearly the entire trench economy runs. She took the role in 2021, and her tenure has spanned the network's recovery from the FTX collapse, the [[pump fun]] explosion, the congestion crises, and the political and celebrity coin waves that made Solana the default chain of [[the trenches]].

## Background

Liu holds a Stanford degree with concentrations in economics and international relations. Her early career ran through traditional finance and consulting: a Morgan Stanley analyst stint in Hong Kong in 2004, McKinsey and Company from 2005 to 2009, and KKR Capstone from 2009 to 2011, followed by three years as chief financial officer of Chinaco Healthcare, where she helped build a private hospital in China. She entered crypto with Earn.com, where profiles describe her as a co founder and CFO; the company was acquired by Coinbase in 2018. She subsequently invested through Volar Capital, co founded the pandemic effort Operation Masks, and joined the board of hardware wallet maker Ledger in September 2024.

## Solana Foundation

As foundation president, Liu is the institutional counterweight to Solana's degen reputation. She has represented the network at Davos, Consensus and the Singapore Fintech Festival, pushing narratives such as PayFi, stablecoin payments and tokenized capital markets that reframe Solana as financial infrastructure rather than a casino. On meme coins specifically she has walked a careful line, acknowledging their speculative nature while noting that they drive community engagement and fund the validator economy. Under her tenure the foundation has faced criticism as well: the consolidated class action over pump.fun names Solana entities and executives alongside Baton Corporation, and skeptics have accused the ecosystem's leadership of profiting from extraction in the trenches. Those claims remain contested allegations, and Liu herself has not been the subject of any adverse finding.

Her governance philosophy, stated directly in an August 10, 2026 post, is that "everything the Foundation does rolls up to two objectives: 1/ attract the best talent to Solana, 2/ attract capital to Solana." The post came three days after Flash.Trade founder Anas Khader shut down his perpetual futures exchange, accusing the Solana Foundation of "kingmaking" by favoring the rival platform Phoenix. Liu rejected the framing directly, writing that "king making" by the foundation is "short sighted and self limiting," arguing instead for what she called "open meritocracy," while acknowledging an "optics problem" with the foundation's social media support of favored projects. DeFi researcher Ignas countered that the Foundation's backing of Phoenix was "obvious" and called the product "inferior." She posts on X as @calilyliu, with about 59,100 followers as of August 2026.

## "Internet capital markets"

Liu is the public face of the "[[Internet Capital Markets|internet capital markets]]" framing now standard across the ecosystem. She delivered "Building Internet Capital Markets on Solana" at TOKEN2049 Dubai 2025, and by 2026 the phrase had become the ecosystem's default self description. In an October 2025 Shanghai speech, transcribed by WuBlockchain, she argued that "everything can be tokenized" and that Solana aims to be the future's financial infrastructure. At a February 10, 2026 Consensus Hong Kong fireside she said blockchains' true strength "lies in finance and markets, not utopian general purpose tech," argued that crypto should "democratise talent and capital formation," stressed that real network and app usage, not governance tokens, must drive sustainable value, and called Asia crypto's "core market" rather than a frontier.

## Public voice

Liu engages meme culture directly and dryly rather than avoiding it. Replying to Solana cofounder [[Anatoly Yakovenko]] in August 2026, her entire response to a joke was "Dentacoin." In July 2026 she coined a term of her own, "RWNFTs," writing "NFTs coming back as collectibles. Like securitization came back as RWA. Maybe we should call them RWNFTs." She also works as a market structure historian in public: when BitMEX announced its shutdown in July 2026, she wrote "Respect where due, BitMEX invented the perp. Early indicator that internet markets need new products and new market structure."

## 2026 discourse

Two other 2026 episodes put Liu at the center of ecosystem argument, alongside the Flash.Trade dispute above. On February 28, 2026, she retweeted a post by OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger reading "don't waste time with crypto," written after Steinberger faced harassment when scammers launched a fake $CLAWD token during his project's rebrand. The retweet drew over a million views and public criticism from industry figures who said it sat awkwardly with her role as Solana Foundation chair. In March 2026 she said "gaming on a blockchain is not coming back," a remark that set off a Web3 gaming relevance debate; Solana cofounder [[Anatoly Yakovenko]] publicly challenged developers to "prove her wrong."

## Significance

Liu matters to the trench economy in the way a central banker matters to a boomtown. She does not launch coins, trade them or build launchpads, but the foundation she leads funds the developers, runs the conferences and defends the network on which every launch, snipe and rug settles. Her framing of Solana as the chain of internet capital markets provided the respectable vocabulary that platforms from [[believe]] to [[jupiter]] used to describe what the trenches were already doing.
