James Wynn is a pseudonymous trader who posts on X as @JamesWynnReal, famous for opening a 40x leveraged Bitcoin long on the perpetuals exchange [[Hyperliquid]] that grew to between 1.1 and 1.27 billion dollars notional in May 2025, among the largest single leveraged bets in crypto history, before it liquidated for over 100 million dollars in losses. He had built his trading stake partly on an early call on [[Pepe]] reported to have made him about 25 million dollars, and after the Bitcoin collapse he pivoted to promoting the Solana meme coin [[moonpig]] while denying he controlled its supply. His 2026 bio reads "Made $100,000,000 trading LEVERAGE on chain. Called PEPE at 600k to billions, made $25m. Hold the record for the largest $BTC long ($1.26bn) in history," with about 470,000 to 480,000 followers across 2026 scrapes. ## Rise as a whale In March 2025 Wynn began trading on Hyperliquid, depositing 4.65 million dollars in USDC; by May 10, 2025 he had accumulated about 46.5 million dollars in profits, built partly on the early PEPE call. ## The billion dollar Bitcoin long Starting May 19, 2025 Wynn opened a 40x leveraged Bitcoin long of 5,520 BTC at about 103,302 dollars, expanding it the next day to 7,764 BTC (about 830 million dollars notional), then scaling to 11,588 BTC at an average of 108,243 dollars by May 24, 2025. CoinDesk and TradingView covered the position live as it crossed 1.1 to 1.27 billion dollars. ## The collapse When Bitcoin fell below 105,000 dollars, a drop attributed to Trump's announced 50 percent EU tariff, Wynn's position liquidated in tranches: 527.29 BTC (55.3 million dollars) at 104,950, then 421.8 BTC (43.9 million dollars) at 104,150, then 95.51 BTC (10 million dollars) at 104,620, for roughly 110 million dollars in realized losses by May 30, 2025. The Block reported the total loss on the trade at over 100 million dollars. Wynn wrote at the time, "One thing for sure is that I have exposed just how corrupt these markets are." He kept trading and kept losing publicly after the Bitcoin collapse: reporting describes him closing a subsequent 1.2 billion dollar long with a 17.5 million dollar loss, then opening a 1 billion dollar 40x short that briefly earned 3 million dollars before he closed it, with his cumulative trading profit reported around 25 million dollars against an initial 3 to 4 million dollar bankroll. ## The MOONPIG turn After the Bitcoin losses Wynn pivoted to promoting moonpig, becoming its most visible booster while denying he was its developer or orchestrator; he stated he had not sold his holdings and had contributed to buybacks and liquidity pool burns to support the project. His own wallet conduct drew suspicion: a side wallet linked to Wynn later dumped roughly 10.9 million MOONPIG tokens worth about 120,000 dollars, fueling doubts about his denials of orchestrating the project. On June 3, 2025 [[Andrew Tate]] burned 20 million MOONPIG tokens (about 750,000 dollars, 2 percent of supply) that Wynn had gifted him, an act of solidarity after Wynn's reported 99 million dollar total leveraged losses; MOONPIG's price rose about 6 percent on the news, and Wynn wrote "I still think $Moonpig has huge potential, gained massive traction in recent weeks. Only clear community driven meme on Solana IMO that's organic and not being promised the world." ## Serial presales and repeated liquidations On April 16, 2026 Wynn posted a raw wallet address soliciting SOL for "a share of 50% of the supply" of a new coin, drawing immediate mockery ("Here's the list of the dumbest money in the world," 674 likes) and a widely shared post noting he had gone from a reported 100 million dollar peak and a billion dollar Bitcoin long to raising just 8,000 dollars in 10 hours on a meme coin presale. By October 2025 an observer noted he had "launched his 69th token." Repeated 2026 liquidations followed. On April 6, 2026 Wynn was reportedly liquidated shorting Bitcoin on Hyperliquid, his account falling from about 100 million dollars to 900 dollars, per community reporting. On July 31, 2026 the tracker Arkham reported he was liquidated for 300,000 dollars shorting the S&P 500 on Hyperliquid, leaving only about 12,000 dollars in his account and warning "if the S&P 500 goes up by 4 dollars, he will be liquidated again." ## The slingoor extraction accusation On August 8, 2026 the trader [[slingoor]] posted a public confession thread naming Wynn directly, alleging Wynn spoiled slingoor's own [[titcoin]] campaign "just shy of 100M" by steering holders into MOONPIG, "which was done purely to extract unlimited money bc he had supply control," adding "he essentially manipulated an entire community to go buy his bundled supply control shit" and that he had sent evidence to [[ZachXBT]] though it had not been publicly released. This is slingoor's allegation, unconfirmed by any formal finding, and no public response from Wynn to it appears in the sources consulted. ## Reputation as a cautionary tale [[inversebrah]] archived an erroneous May 2025 LookOnChain post congratulating Wynn for over 25 million dollars in Hyperliquid profits while he was actually on a losing streak, an example Protos cited of the archive account's function. His name has become trench shorthand for blown up leverage and self sabotage: "James Wynn adding more capital to lower his liquidation price which just delayed the inevitable" (258 likes) and "Like Jawz, big brother machi, James Wynn; they didn't know what to do with riches and gave it all back to the market." ## Current status As of August 2026 Wynn remained actively posting and soliciting community coin launches ("Create a meme coin direct all the creator fees to me and if I like it I'll push it to Valhalla," 119 likes, July 28, 2026), with his account bio pivoted to promoting a perpetuals exchange referral code rather than leading with his trading record. ## References - https://x.com/JamesWynnReal - https://www.gate.com/crypto-wiki/article/the-rise-and-fall-of-james-wynn-s-2025-crypto-trading-on-hyperliquid - https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2025/05/22/crypto-trader-opens-11b-long-bitcoin-bet-on-hyperliquid-using-40x-leverage - https://www.prestolabs.io/research/how-to-lose-85mm-james-wynns-1-27b-btc-long - https://www.theblock.co/news/ecosystems/2025-05-30-hyperliquid-trader-james-wynn-hit-with-over-100-million-loss-as-leveraged-bitcoin-trade-unravels-356341 - https://cryptomaniaks.com/news/who-is-james-wynn-bitcoin-whale-hyperliquid-pepe-moonpig - https://coingape.com/andrew-tate-burns-james-wynns-20m-moonpig-tokens-price-reacts/ - https://x.com/dethective/status/2044859417179377984 - https://x.com/3orovik/status/2044955074540003807 - https://x.com/TheMaran/status/2071498033267982785 - https://x.com/devameer0/status/2041270228835770852 - https://x.com/arkham/status/2083124393216024879 - https://x.com/slingoorio/status/2086138457068319160 - https://protos.com/hyperliquid-leaderboards-confuse-traders-as-hype-hits-all-time-high/ - https://x.com/LomahCrypto/status/2076768490422489246 - https://x.com/Jack_Kodesh/status/2086046712540320048 - https://x.com/JamesWynnReal/status/2082075884211655103
