IBRL stands for "Increase Bandwidth, Reduce Latency," a phrase with a double life. Described across Solana ecosystem sources as the network's core technical north star, the literal engineering mandate to keep making the chain faster and cheaper as usage grows, it is also a crypto Twitter in joke and rallying cry, used in the same register as "IYKYK" or "WAGMI." Both [[Mert Mumtaz]], who claims to have coined it as one of his repeated "manlet slogans," and Solana cofounder [[Anatoly Yakovenko]], who owns it as a literal roadmap phrase, are closely associated with the term. ## Technical meaning Solana infrastructure sources, including Jump Crypto, Triton and Helius, describe IBRL as the network's core engineering mandate: the ongoing effort to keep increasing bandwidth and reducing latency as the chain scales. ## Spread as a meme The phrase's documented spread as an internet meme clusters around November 2024. Developer shek_dev posted "Increase Bandwidth, Reduce Latency, IBRL so simple" on X, and [[Anatoly Yakovenko]] posted about it in the same window, joking, "The plan for @solana's scalability... IBRL. But seriously, it's to just not think about infinity. That's all. Just focus on a 2x," treating IBRL as shorthand for the network's entire scaling philosophy. ## Mert Mumtaz's claim [[Mert Mumtaz]] claims personal authorship as part of a repeated slogan habit. In a November 2025 post he wrote, "the secret to any CT meme is just repetition, super underrated. OPOS, IBRL, ICM, trillions, zidelined, retardio etc all just are versions of this," and separately named IBRL among his self described "past bangers" of invented "manlet slogans." He is also reported to have built a Solana roadmap website, solanaroadmap.com, whose entire content is simply the word "IBRL." Mumtaz uses the term as a literal performance metric too: on January 5, 2026 he wrote, "Helius by far the highest IBRL score of the top validators on Solana... the only validator in the top that comes close to us is bitwise, also run by us," treating "IBRL score" as a quantified measure of validator block building quality. ## Productized tooling Infrastructure took the branding literally. [[Jito]] launched an "IBRL Explorer" for Solana block visibility in January 2026, and a separate analytics operation, IBRL Analytics (ibrl.wtf), publishes its own "IBRL Explorer" measuring validator block building quality, direct evidence the meme became productized tooling rather than staying a joke. A separate community also launched an IBRL branded token on the Gavel launch platform in May 2025 as a technology demonstration of anti sandwich and buyback and burn mechanics, explicitly named after the phrase rather than the other way around. ## Identity marker Community adoption runs deeper than slang. Multiple Solana adjacent accounts carry "IBRL" or "IBRL/acc" directly in their bios as a stated ideology, examples including a Helius researcher's bio reading "IBRL / Tropical fruits enjoyooooor / Research @Helius," a DoubleZero staffer's bio "Chief of Staff & Self appointed evangelist @DoubleZero... IBRL," and an Anza researcher's bio "IBRL / NFA," evidence the phrase functions as a tribal marker across Solana infrastructure teams and not only as a meme coin ticker. ## Backlash Not everyone treats the branding as a win. A recurring counter meme holds that "IBRL killed the trenches," a small account posting "IBRL killed the trenches. I blame @mert" as an example, accusing the pursuit of speed and professionalized infrastructure of sanitizing the chaotic, high risk casino energy that originally drove [[the trenches]]. ## Current status As of August 2026, IBRL remains in daily active use across Solana ecosystem accounts as both a literal technical goal and an identity marker, with productized tooling such as Jito's IBRL Explorer and IBRL Analytics keeping the phrase load bearing infrastructure branding rather than a faded 2024 meme. It sits alongside [[Internet Capital Markets]] as part of the same self described slogan family, per Mumtaz's own framing. ## References - https://jumpcrypto.com/resources/ibrl-increase-bandwidth-reduce-latency - https://blog.triton.one/latency-bandwidth-and-ibrl-explained/ - https://x.com/shek_dev/status/1858725642621382811 - https://x.com/aeyakovenko/status/1859464467475726397 - https://x.com/mert/status/1986798482712371654 - https://x.com/mert/status/1990135934499828126 - https://x.com/mert/status/2008269275191033882 - https://x.com/jito/status/2008239586900636142 - https://ibrl.wtf/blog/introducing-the-ibrl-explorer-measuring-validator-block-building-quality/ - https://x.com/__lostin__ - https://x.com/MellyCay00 - https://x.com/qkniep - https://x.com/padrino_sol/status/1927089365647347889 - https://x.com/0xbl33p/status/2046007840327033277
