HarryPotterObamaSonic10Inu is a [[meme coin]] on Ethereum that deliberately trades under the ticker BITCOIN. Launched in May 2023 during the frenzy that followed [[Pepe]], it is the definitive absurdist meme coin, a token whose entire concept is the collision between the most ridiculous possible name and the most famous ticker in finance.

## Origin

The name comes from a 2021 joke that circulated on Crypto Twitter mocking meme coin naming conventions, which strung together Harry Potter, Barack Obama, Sonic the Hedgehog, the number 10, and the Inu suffix common to dog coins. In May 2023 anonymous developers deployed the joke as a real Ethereum token with a supply of one billion, zero transaction taxes, renounced ownership, and locked liquidity, and assigned it the ticker BITCOIN so that price sites and exchange tickers would display sentences like "BITCOIN is up 40 percent today." Its surreal wizard Obama Sonic artwork became a self sustaining meme.

## Market history

The token went viral in the summer of 2023 as traders embraced the bit, and it survived where most joke coins of that season died. During the late 2024 meme coin bull market it reached an all time high of about 0.37 dollars on October 12, 2024, which put its market capitalization at roughly 370 million dollars per CoinGecko. It spawned imitators on other chains, including BNB Chain and Base versions and a HarryPotterObamaSonic10Inu 2.0. By August 2026 the original Ethereum token's market capitalization had fallen to about 13 million dollars, roughly 97 percent below the peak.

## Cultural impact

HarryPotterObamaSonic10Inu turned ticker squatting into performance art and forced data aggregators, exchanges, and journalists to print its full name, which was the point. It is cited as the purest expression of the 2023 shitcoin renaissance, where irony itself was the product, and it directly prefigured the chaotic naming culture of [[pump.fun]] and [[the trenches]], where a name that breaks a website is a feature. Alongside [[Pepe]] it marks the moment meme coins stopped pretending to be anything else.
