Gm, short for "good morning," is the standard greeting of crypto social culture. Posted as a standalone tweet, dropped in a Discord channel, or exchanged in Telegram groups, it functions less as a report of the time of day and more as a signal of presence and belonging: the sender is awake, online, and still participating. Replying gm to a stranger's gm is a minimal social contract, and knowing to use it marks a user as inside the culture.

## Origin

Know Your Meme and other chronicles trace scattered use on crypto Twitter to the late 2010s, with the practice exploding during the NFT boom of 2021, when entire timelines opened the day with gm threads. Its appeal was its simplicity: two letters, no ideology, equally available to a founder or an anonymous account with two followers. The greeting spawned an ecosystem of its own, including gm branded podcasts, merchandise, project names, and several tokens, and the companion "gn" (good night) closes the loop at the end of the day.

## Usage

Gm survived the cycles that killed most 2021 slang.
