Engagement farming is the practice of posting content designed primarily to harvest interactions, likes, replies, reposts, and impressions, rather than to inform. On crypto Twitter the term is an accusation: it implies that an account's questions, polls, hot takes, and giveaways exist to game metrics, not to communicate. The practice is financially motivated, since X's ad revenue sharing program pays creators based on engagement from Premium subscribers, and since crypto projects have rewarded posting activity with airdrops and points.

## Mechanics

Standard farming formats include deliberately wrong statements posted to bait corrections, "reply with your ticker" prompts, fake polls, recycled memes, giveaway retweet lotteries, and rage bait. In the trenches, farming interlocks with token promotion: an account grows through engagement bait, then monetizes the audience through paid posts for a [[kol]] round or by shilling its own positions (see [[shill]]). Projects run their own version, paying users or bots to swarm announcements with replies, and yap style reward programs that score social activity have industrialized the loop. Observers of crypto Twitter have criticized the resulting flood of low effort and AI generated content posted purely for rewards. Farming also feeds credibility fraud: engagement bought or baited makes a [[larp]] persona look organic before it starts moving markets.

## Usage

Calling a post engagement farming dismisses it as insincere. The label attaches especially to accounts that ask obvious questions ("what's your top pick for this cycle?") or manufacture outrage on schedule. Because attention is the scarce input of every meme coin move, farming is understood in the trenches as upstream market manipulation: whoever aggregates engagement can later direct it at a chart.

## History

Engagement bait predates crypto, but the term became ubiquitous after X introduced creator ad revenue sharing in 2023, which tied payouts directly to engagement and, by wide reporting, worsened the incentive to farm. Crypto Twitter adopted the phrase as one of its standard insults during the same period.
