Degen Spartan AI (DEGENAI) is an AI agent token on the [[Solana]] blockchain and the first agent produced by the [[ai16z]] project. The agent is an AI recreation of DegenSpartan, a famously abrasive pseudonymous trader from an earlier era of crypto Twitter, trained on his tweets and knowledge graph. DEGENAI is a separate token from AI16Z, which represented the project's [[daos.fun]] trading fund; DEGENAI attached specifically to the trading agent character.

## Origin

Shaw Walters and the ai16z team launched Degen Spartan AI in October 2024, in the immediate aftermath of [[Goatseus Maximus]] proving that AI personas could carry tokens. It was the first agent to run on what became the Eliza framework, later the most widely used agent stack of the cycle. The agent posted autonomously on X, Discord, and Telegram in DegenSpartan's contemptuous voice, and the design tied it to the ai16z flywheel: holders could attempt to influence the agent's views, and the project stated that a share of trading profits, commonly cited at 8 percent, would buy back DEGENAI.

## Market history

DEGENAI traded through the autumn as the second asset of the ai16z complex, then ran with the broader [[AI agent meta]] into the new year. It reached an all time high of about 0.10 dollars on January 2, 2025, an implied market capitalization of roughly 105 million dollars, the same week AI16Z itself peaked above two billion.

## Decline and status

The token collapsed with the sector through 2025 and was further damaged by the disintegration of its parent project: ai16z rebranded to elizaOS, faced a class action alleging its marketing misled investors, and settled in 2026, with Walters declaring the AI16Z token "dead" in August 2026. By then DEGENAI traded 99.9 percent below its high with a market capitalization around 100 thousand dollars. It retains historical significance as the proof of concept for the Eliza stack, the direct ancestor of the hundreds of agents that defined [[the trenches]] in the winter of 2024 to 2025.
