COPE is an early [[Solana]] token launched in the spring of 2021, part meme and part product, built around the idea of scoring crypto influencers by how accurate their public market calls turned out to be. It predates the modern Solana [[meme coin]] era by more than two years and belongs to the founding cohort of the Serum ecosystem. ## Origin The project was initiated by a pseudonymous founder known as Cyrii. Its stated design had two phases: the first retrospectively analyzed market calls made by traders on social media and assigned each caller a COPE score, with the top one hundred callers assembled into a rotating index; the second phase proposed investment products built on that data. Cyrii explained that the three dots in the COPE logo represented three planned roadmap phases, and phase one, covering the airdrop, staking COPE, and cross chain functionality, was already reported complete in contemporary 2021 coverage. The name institutionalized trader slang, "cope" being the standard trenches term for rationalizing a losing position. Distribution was an airdrop of 2,000 COPE to participants in the DeFi hackathon run by Solana and Serum, and the token listed on the Serum DEX at 0.50 dollars on March 30, 2021. ## Market history COPE rose to about 5.43 dollars by April 11, 2021, an eleven fold gain for airdrop recipients in under two weeks, and CoinGecko records the all time high at 8.54 dollars on May 16, 2021. Contemporary commentary credited the airdrop's success with inspiring a wave of imitators with names like HOPE, ROPE and KOPE, all launched on Solana within days of COPE's airdrop success; their popularity coincided with a roughly 55 percent rise in SOL's price as users bought SOL specifically to generate fresh wallet addresses eligible for the copycat airdrops. Reliable peak market capitalization figures were never well recorded; the supply was capped at 50 million with under 20 million circulating in later years. The token faded through 2022 as the Serum ecosystem collapsed alongside FTX, and the promised trader index products never achieved lasting adoption. By 2026 COPE traded with negligible liquidity at a market capitalization near 32,000 dollars. ## Cultural impact COPE matters as prehistory. It demonstrated years before [[bonk]] that Solana could mint attention assets from community culture, and its airdrop first model anticipated the distribution experiments that later defined the chain. Its subject matter, the scoring of loud traders' predictions, made it a self referential artifact of Crypto Twitter, and its name survives in daily use across [[the trenches]] long after the token stopped trading in size. In Solana meme histories COPE is usually placed beside [[Samoyedcoin]] as evidence that the chain's meme instinct was present from the beginning, then wiped nearly to zero before the 2023 revival. ## References - CoinGecko: https://www.coingecko.com/en/coins/cope - CoinLore: https://www.coinlore.com/coin/cope - blockchain-council.org: https://www.blockchain-council.org/blockchain/solanasol-price-rallied-more-than-50/ - Medium: https://medium.com/@Moudy./cope-more-than-a-coin-163a03c50429 - Forbes: https://www.forbes.com/digital-assets/assets/cope-token-cope/ - tokenpost.com: https://tokenpost.com/Solana-SOL-crypto-up-100-in-less-than-1-month-8126
